Global product launch. 7 new patients, 2015.
Global Digital Marketing, ASICS

MetaRun was three years in the making, built under the internal name BOB, for best of the best. The brief to the Institute of Sport Science had no cost ceiling and no deadline. Five new technologies came out of it. The CEO fronted the launch personally, which almost never happened. Then it went on sale for thirty-four days, in a run of sixty thousand pairs, at two hundred fifty dollars, with retailers instructed to return anything unsold on January 1. No second wave. No sell-through window. No time to correct a slow start. Whatever the launch did, it did immediately, and digital was the only channel that could move that fast.
Two hundred fifty dollars was near the top of the running market, and the reason to pay it was five patented technologies most runners had never heard of. That's a spec sheet, not a reason to spend the money. And running is not sneaker culture. This audience doesn't queue for drops.
Three decisions carried it.
Sell the countdown, not the shoe. The pre-launch clock did the work that scarcity usually does in sneaker releases, without pretending runners behave like sneakerheads. It gave people a date to organize around before there was anything to buy.
Make it about the runner, not the technology. #MasterIt asked people what mastering a barrier looked like for them. FlyteFoam and AdaptTruss are proof, not the pitch. The pitch was that this shoe was built for someone chasing something.
Seed credibility before the window opened. Getting shoes onto real runners early meant honest reviews were live when the thirty-four days started, not three weeks in when it was already over.

MetaRun set a new price ceiling for the brand and was widely covered as a concept product, a testbed for technology rather than a volume play. That's what it turned out to be. FlyteFoam, the Jacquard Mesh upper, the heel clutching system, and X-GEL migrated into Gel-Nimbus, Gel-Kayano, Gel-Cumulus, and GT-2000, and the platform later carried into MetaRide. The technologies introduced in a thirty-four day limited release became standard across the running line.
